In Madagascar, there had been an increase in exploitation of ebony timber from Rosewood and Mahogany trees. The species were being exploited and destroyed by illegal logging for trade. The Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species cracked down on regulating trade after noticing a significant decline in Rosewood Timber of about 70% in six years. Illegal logging collects around $30 billion annually under organized crime, and drains the revenue from poor local communities. Total, Madagascar has protected 135 species of Mahogany and Rosewood timber because of regulated timber trade.
